What Is Felted Soap? 7 Benefits of Wool Felted Soap

If you've never tried felted soap, you might be wondering why anyone would wrap a perfectly good bar of soap in wool.

The answer is surprisingly simple. Felted soap combines the cleansing benefits of traditional bar soap with the gentle exfoliation of a washcloth, all in one practical, easy-to-use product.

It's also a lovely example of how something handmade can make an everyday routine a little more enjoyable.

At Simply Natural Canada, we've recently expanded our collection of colourful, hand-felted soaps, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to explain what makes them so special.

What Is Felted Soap?

Felted soap is a bar of soap wrapped in natural wool fibres that have been worked together using water, friction and pressure. This process, known as wet felting, creates a snug wool covering around the soap.

Our hand-felted soaps have natural wool coverings. Wool types can vary by bar, so check the individual product description for details.

The wool acts as a built-in washcloth, producing a lovely lather while gently exfoliating your skin. As the soap gradually gets smaller with use, the wool covering continues to shrink around it.

It's a clever, practical combination that makes washing a little simpler.

7 Benefits of Using Felted Soap

1. A Soap and Washcloth in One

One of the biggest advantages of felted soap is that you don't need a separate washcloth or shower pouf. The wool creates a soft, textured surface that helps distribute the soap's lather while gently cleansing your skin.

Simply wet the bar, rub it between your hands to create a lather and wash as usual.

2. Gentle, Natural Exfoliation

Wool fibres provide mild physical exfoliation, helping remove loose surface skin cells as you wash. Unlike some exfoliating products that rely on added plastic particles or abrasive ingredients, felted soap uses natural wool fibres to create its texture.

The level of exfoliation depends on the wool and how firmly you rub, so use a gentle touch, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

3. A Better Grip on Slippery Soap

We've all had a slippery bar of soap escape our hands in the shower.

The textured wool covering makes felted soap easier to hold, even when wet. This can be particularly helpful for children or anyone who finds smooth bars difficult to grip.

It's a small detail that makes a surprisingly big difference.

4. Keeps Small Soap Pieces Together

The wool covering keeps the soap contained as the bar gets smaller, making the remaining pieces easier to handle. Instead of handling the exposed soap directly, you're working up a lather through the fibres.

As with any bar soap, how long it lasts depends on how frequently you use it and how well you allow it to dry between uses.

5. Less Need for Extra Bath Accessories

If you're trying to simplify your bathroom routine or reduce unnecessary purchases, felted soap is a practical option.

Because the wool acts as a washcloth, you may find you no longer need a separate shower pouf or other exfoliating accessory. And unlike synthetic mesh poufs, natural wool fibres are biodegradable under suitable conditions.

6. A Handmade Product with Character

There's something appealing about a product that has been made by hand. Each felted soap has its own combination of colours, textures and patterns, making every bar a little different.

Our collection includes everything from fresh citrus and herbal scents to comforting oatmeal and lightly fragrant varieties. They're functional, but they're also colourful little additions to your bathroom.

7. A Thoughtful, Practical Gift

Felted soaps make lovely small gifts, particularly for someone who enjoys handmade products, natural bath essentials or discovering something a little different.

They're a thoughtful addition to a gift basket, a practical stocking stuffer or a small treat for yourself. And because they combine soap and washcloth in one, they're useful as well as attractive.

How Do You Use Felted Soap?

Using felted soap couldn't be easier.

  1. Wet the bar. Hold it under warm water until the wool is thoroughly damp.
  2. Work up a lather. Rub the bar between your hands or directly against your skin using gentle circular motions.
  3. Wash and rinse. Enjoy the combination of cleansing soap and light exfoliation.
  4. Squeeze and dry. Gently squeeze out excess water and leave the bar somewhere it can dry between uses.

A little tip: Avoid leaving your felted soap sitting in a puddle of water. Like regular bar soap, it benefits from being allowed to dry properly.

What Happens When the Soap Is Gone?

One of the most interesting things about felted soap is what happens as you use it. The wool continues to tighten around the shrinking soap until eventually the soap is used up and you're left with a small piece of felt.

Check the maker's guidance for the wool, dyes and any decorative fibres before adding the remaining felt to your home compost. Avoid composting any synthetic fibres or other non-compostable materials.

You can also repurpose the felt as a small cleaning pad before deciding how to dispose of it.

Is Felted Soap Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

That depends on both the soap inside and your individual skin.

The wool provides physical exfoliation, which some people enjoy, but others may find too stimulating for sensitive or irritated skin. The ingredients and fragrance in the soap itself also matter.

If your skin is particularly sensitive, consider choosing a mild, unscented variety and testing it on a small area first. Our Shea Butter Petite Felted Soap is one option worth exploring.
